Climate change is no longer a distant threat—it is here, and one of its most visible signs is the rapid melting of glaciers. Glaciers are not only stunning natural wonders, but they also serve as the largest reservoirs of freshwater on Earth, storing nearly 70% of the world’s freshwater. Pakistan is known as the “Land of Glaciers” because it hosts over 7,200 glaciers in its northern mountains.

These glaciers feed rivers, provide irrigation for crops, generate hydropower, and supply drinking water for millions of people.

In short, glaciers are the lifelines of human civilization.

1. Global Warming – Since the Industrial Revolution, Earth’s temperature has been rising steadily due to human activity.

2. Greenhouse Gases – Carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the atmosphere, accelerating ice melt.

3. Black Carbon Pollution – Smoke from coal, diesel, and biomass burning settles on ice, making it darker and causing it to absorb more heat.

4. Deforestation – Loss of forests reduces Earth’s natural cooling system, raising global temperatures.

5. Natural Factors – Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and shifting weather patterns also contribute.

According to NASA, glaciers are melting twice as fast today as they did 50 years ago.

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) warns that by 2100, up to 70% of glaciers could disappear if current warming trends continue.

In the Himalaya–Karakoram region of Pakistan, glaciers are retreating at an average of 0.6 meters per year.

Between 2000 and 2020, the world lost 267 billion tons of ice annually.
